New Media Saviors?

One main theme of the New Media and Public Communication is the heroism of the new media. In my last post I discussed just how evil the old media can be with its sponsorships and its agendas, but the new media is also guilty of these misdeeds. THIS article from thewrap.com tells of how new media outlets like Google and Facebook have begun to take on the face of evil corporations.

For Google, this face of evil has taken form in hypocrisy. As a company, Google has almost always been a supporter of net neutrality but recently it entered into a contract with Verizon concerning internet connections.

Facebook’s misdeed is much more memorable to us but it was greatly overlooked. We have all heard about how our personal information can be accessed by commercial enterprises, but what we have not heard is that this is greatly true. Facebook has sold its users out to sponsorship.

These saviors of the media are not the saviors we thought they were. They are just as guilty of the crimes of the old media. We now have to question whether new media really is the answer to our media problems.
